Whittington Castle Comprises of the castle front, the adjoining cottage which goes back hundreds of years, the gatehouse tower and also a guard room. We had a blast the last visit we had here and loved the activity of the emf meters, shadow meter activity, ouija board and table tipping.
The fabric of the Castle has been much changed over the hundreds of years since it was built. William Peverel built the Norman Motte and Bailey castle after the demolition of the previous stronghold built at the time of King Offa, probably of wood with a stockade of sharp posts. William Peverel had no male heir so his eldest daughter Mellet inherited the castle. The victor of a tournament for her hand in marriage was Warin de Metz of Lorraine who founded a long line of Fitzwarines. They held the castle until 1420. The tower keep is 12th century, but has been later modified, the outer gatehouse is no doubt the work of Sir Fulk Fitzwarine of the early 13th century and above the archway can be seen his coat of arms.During the civil war it was loyal to the Royalists until Oliver Cromwell's Roundheads took it by force in 1643. At the time of Queen Mary II ownership of the castle was granted to Fitz-Alan, Earl of Arundel. Later it was sold to Francis William Albany Esq, a London merchant whose Manor and Estate was Fernhill. When his granddaughter Sarah married Thomas Lloyd Esq of Aston the two estates were united. The last joint owners were Mrs A Hamilton-Hill and the Lady Newborough of the Lloyd lineage. The Castle is now owned and run by the local community. Little is known about this impressive object and its connection with the Castle and the Owners. It is approx 5'x3'x3' and weighs about 10cwt. There is much rumour and innuendo about it but that's probably not surprising considering there is a curse on it. The key is apparently in the moat!!! The chest was recently moved from the Castle for safe-keeping, but is it the chest that is cursed, or the castle?
Many people have reported seeing the apparitions of two boys in the gatehouse windows one being known as Thomas Weekley who came through not only the ouija board, the emfs meters and also showed as a shadow on the light intensity meter and came through on the dowsing rods. A presence being felt behind you and when you turn around, and seeing a shadow is quite common. Other apparitions that have been spotted at Whittington Castle are those of a hooded figure seen under the gateway and the phantom blacksmith in a leather apron who we determined as Billy. Francis, a strong presence of a man in the well room was affecting guests making them feel dizzy and queasy. Our Medium Sam Picked up on Francis and since then, other paranormal companies have sensed him since. He is a gatekeeper who also has touched a previous guest of ours. There is also a spirit of Elizabeth in the 1600's who had tradgedy blighted throughout her life when she lost a baby, and then later tried and hung for witchcraft. Two servant spirits from two different time periods in the school room, one being called Gail and the other Mathilda who was so strong on the table tipping, she managed to levitate the table and also break it!What will you comes across at this fantastic location?
