Harwich Redoubt Fort is very impressive on arrival. With lots of rooms to explore and previous activity here from the last visit, what will you encounter on the night?
A circular fort commanding the eastern side of Harwich port. It was built between 1807 and 1809 to support Landguard Fort on the opposite shore near Felixstowe and to form part of the chain of Martello Tower defences. It is 200 feet in diameter, is surrounded by a deep ditch and can only be entered by one removable drawbridge. It was originally armed with 10 cannon but these were upgraded in the 1860's and 1870's and by 1872 three 9 inch RML guns were in place. One still remains although it is thought the other two are buried in the moat. In the 1920's it was abandoned and the surrounding housing built. It was taken over by the Harwich Society in 1969, by which time it was completely overgrown, but it has now been fully restored.
Although the fort has grown in popularity and groups that have made the trip have not been disappointed though. Recent reports and sightings include, mysterious footsteps, apparitions seen through windows and supernatural experiences in the haunted cells. It is reported that in 1872 when the big 12 ton cannons were being hauled into the fort a hawser broke under the strain and as it whipped back it decapitated a soldier standing nearby. His apparition is alleged to been seen in the fort, there are different reports that sometimes he is seen headless and other times with his head under his arm! April 2012 visit: A ghost called 'Pete' was making the glass move, in addition setting off the emfs to questions, and also you can hear him finishing his shift at 12am midnight sharp and you can hear him on the stairs (see video of last visit). A spirit called Joan, she still waits outside the artillery shaft, she wont go in as its restricted to men only.In the Moat, 3 ladies all felt sick and had stomach pains, we acertained via the k2 meters that it was a young woman that had been pregnant and died on a farm that was there previous.October 2012 visit: Amazing, absolutly amazing. 3 groups of 10 rotated around the vigils and in Sams proved very interesting. The smell of pipe smoke was noticed by all 3 groups and the vast majority of the ladies were touched. There was also a spirit of a murderer and also a priest that was murdered during the disolution of the monastaries that Sam had sensed, and the keeper on the night confirmed there was indeed a monastary there prior. In the Cells we had very interesting results on the Ouija board and also the ladies were feeling pains in the stomach like the previous visit as well as in the moat. In the moat itself we had fantastic k2 meter results and also with the light intesity meter, picking up thier shadows too. This was a spirit of the same young girl, as we now know aged 13 and pregnant and she had the baby taken from her stomach whilst still alive, by folks claiming it was evil and was left there to die without a buriel. In the moat too we also got a spirit of a woman who used to visit a prisoner called Frank, and we heard Franks sighs on the superhearing enhancers. At the end of the evening we said 'were goin now Frank, can ou do somethng spectacular'' and a moment later, a light source with a trail on the end shot above our heads and was witnessed by all.Your event will include
