Jedburgh Jail was built on the former site of the 12th century fortress Jethart Castle which had been build by King David I to protect the town of Jedburgh. King Malcolm iv died at Jethart castle in 1165.  The original Jethart Castle was destroyed in 1409 by order of the Scottish Parliament to prevent it falling into the ownership of English Invaders. The castle was invaded by the English that many times, they the Scottish decided to pull it down around 1450.Built as a Howard Reform Prison in 1823, this impressive building is the only existing example of its kind in Scotland.Very many people were hung here, in fact it became known as ' Jedburgh Justice'  which means hang them first and ask questions later. Girls were imprisoned here for incest with thier fathers. The fathers were not locked up, but the girls were as they were seen as an enticement. The castle actually closed in the late 1870's  Jedburgh Jail has been the visit of the paranormal activity. There is reports of a piper seen on the battlements, East wing:Extreme poltergeist activity has been experienced here in the male and female debtors prison east wing near the poster which says 'dividing wall'. And also on the first floor corridor of the male debtors prison block.  Margeret Mcgregor, commited there in 1879 is also responsible for stone throwing. She was commited for incest with her two infant babies only two weeks old. Both babies died within two days of each othe rin the male and females debtors prison block. Is this why Margeret stays? She also moved the stool where in the room where her story is. Amale Jailer known as Joshya also roams this wing. Main Centre Piece Block/or central command.Feelings of someone unseen around you has been felt as well as witnesses to light phanomena. Doors have slammed shut in the kitchen in the main centerpiece block, groans heard on the first floor. Temperature changes in Cell 1 and a black mass is witnessed here. West Wing: In the West wing in the cells temperature changes on command. In addition a black mass has been seen. Feelings of dread on the ground floor cells, as well as shadows being seen. Footsteps are also heard in the corridors. Many Ghosts from periods of time are here. From the Roman Invasion and the borders, to the David I period and then the unlucky souls of the prison. Keys get lost and dropped. Apparitions have been seen and electrical equipment just stopping and battery drainage. So bring plenty of them for your cameras! North Wing:North wing the Males Criminal cells :A prisoner called Robert roams the prison.  In the Males criminal block corridor, the doors shut  near cell 18 and dissembodied breaths are heard. Whistles are heard as well.
